The New Zealand dollar was little changed despite a global rally in investors’ appetite for riskier, higher-yielding assets after Portugal managed to sell government bonds.

Stocks in Europe climbed as investors were more optimistic about the region’s indebtedness after Portugal sold 1.25 billion euros worth of debt at a yield of 6.72%, below the 7% level regarded as unsustainable. More...

Ratings agency Moody's appears comfortable with the New Zealand government's current and forecast debt levels, saying it is "highly likely" levels will remain on the stronger side of its Aaa sovereign credit rating range.
However Moody's gave a small warning about New Zealand's lack of diversity in the economy and noted the potential risks from the country's reliance on offshore funding. More…

The New Zealand Debt Management Office increased the amount of New Zealand government bonds it sold in a tender this week in response to strong demand - particularly from one overseas investor.

The office, which manages the Government's debt, sold $950 million of bonds at a tender on Thursday. It was the largest tender the office has held in decades. More….

European court ruling on gender could

Top insurers have warned that consumers will face higher costs for car insurance, life insurance and annuities if the European Court of Justice enforces a ban on using gender as a factor in setting premiums.

The Luxembourg court has been asked to rule on an opinion reached by the advocate general, Juliane Kokott, that it is legally inappropriate for insurers to link risk to a person's sex. If the court supports her opinion, UK insurers will no longer be allowed to differentiate between men and women when underwriting a variety of types of financial products. More …

Long-time free trade critic Professor Jane Kelsey has had another crack at the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, this time over internet liability.

“A campaign by the US entertainment industry to use the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) to make internet firms liable for illegal downloads by their users needs to be headed off at the pass,” said Professor Kelsey, a strong critic of the proposed free trade deal. More…

Hair trend raises fear of cancer

An investigation is being made into products used in a hair-straightening trend which is sweeping the world because of fears they contain dangerous levels of the cancer-causing chemical formaldehyde.

The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association of New Zealand (CTFA) has issued a warning to hairdressers, saying some products on the market are believed to contain between 10 and 75 times the legal level of formaldehyde. More…

Women who eat a lot of red meat may be putting themselves at increased risk of stroke, a new study of more than 30,000 Swedish women hints.

The study team found that those in the top tenth for red meat consumption, who ate at least 102 grams daily, were 42 per cent more likely to suffer a stroke due to blocked blood flow in the brain compared to women who ate less than 25 grams of red meat daily.  More…
